The Rudi De Saer pigeon family ends the long distance season in style, winning most notably a 1st Provincial Tulle yearlings. But they also won a crucial top prize in the old birds race, earning them the title of 6th Nat. Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB.

The national race from Tulle was the closing race of the 2016 long distance season. It was quite a turbulent season with many difficult races, due to the weather conditions. Many long distance fanciers have lost quite a number of racing pigeons; the number of losses was higher than ever before.
Rudi De Saer had his share of bad luck as well. They were well prepared for the season, and all set for the opening classic from Limoges in late May. Team De Saer has made history in this race in the past, which explains why it is their favourite classic on the calendar. The entire old birds’ team was basketed for this race but the event was a major disappointment. He did have some excellent results at club level, with a 2-3-5-6-13-16 against 376 pigeons and a 16/38. Unfortunately the stormy weather near Paris in the early afternoon gave the racing team for Limoges a hard time: almost a third of the old birds’ team for the long distance failed to get back home that evening, including many champions. Racing bird Neymar was one of them.

All was not lost for Rudi but he did lose a substantial part of his racing team. He was suddenly left without some of his most renowned prize winners, pigeons that have won many prestigious titles. He felt he had to complete the rest of the season at half strength. Some pigeons got back home a few days later (including Neymar, who went straight to the breeding loft), but their racing season was basically over.

Like a champion

But Rudi fought his way back like a real champion. He had to start looking for new champions among his collection of young long distance pigeons, pigeons that could win championship points over the course of the season, and perhaps an ace pigeon title as well. He competed in the race from Cahors with just four pigeons (1st club and 3/4); the rest of the team went to Châteauroux and Argenton to prepare for Libourne-Limoges-Jarnac-Brive-Tulle. The team was divided over these five races, in which the De Saer pigeons could try to take revenge. The reorganised racing team performed really well, as you can tell from the following overview:

Rudi De Saer had a difficult start to the season but that did not put him off. He fought back and he showed that his racing team was still strong enough to play a decisive role in the national long distance competition in Belgium, despite having lost some key players. His talented pigeon breed managed to get back on top of its game in the long distance classics in July, winning most notably a provincial victory from Tulle and the title of 6th Nat. Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB (and possibly a 1st Provincial as well). Congratulations.
